Nicaragua

Highlight:

Isla de Ometepe

Why?

It was cool to stay on such a beautiful, unpaved, island formed by two volcanoes rising out of Lake Nicaragua and I was amazed to find out that some people had grown up on the island never having left it.

Isla de Ometepe

What did you do?

Hiked a volcano, biked on the most ridiculously bumpy terrain to see some ancient petroglyphs, and ate some fantastic food.

Lasting memory?

Watching a cloud of smoke form above Volcan Concepción as my ferry departed the island.

Highlight:

Granada

Why?

I loved the colonial look and feel of the place. The cobblestone streets, the whitewash buildings, the history there and the slow-paced way of life.

A mirador (lookout) in Catarina

What did you do?

Visited nearby Coyotepe, which is home to some underground dungeons, went to the little village of Catarina, known for its handicrafts, and this was the place I discovered Pupusas – a food a would come to adore throughout the rest of my time in Central America.

Lasting memory?

Walking through the a typical, mazy market one morning and being horrified at the sight of piles up piles of raw meat sitting in the sun gathering flies.
