Taiwan

Highlight:

Taipei.

Why?

It’s got a great vibe, it’s lively, the MRT is excellent which made getting around very easy, lots cool temples and night markets, and I had some really good nights out there.

A Taipei Temple

What did you do?

I went up to the top of Taipei 101 (for a while the tallest skyscraper in the world), visited several really impressive temples in and around the city, drank pearl tea in and ate street food in Danshui -a costal suburb of the capital – and ate street food at the night markets (with varying success, it has to be said!)

Lasting memory?

Being struck by the very first temple I went to, its painstaking design, and particularly what the natives do at the temple. It was all so new to me.

Highlight:

Sun Moon Lake

Why?

A beautiful landscape set around a lake in the shape of the sun and the moon. I really liked the peaceful setting and the walks that were on offer around the lake. At night the whole place lights up and it looks rather special.

What did you do?

Walked some of the trails that are laid out around the lake, rode the gondola, and took a boat ride. Oh, and not forgetting a visit to the massive Wenwu temple.

Lasting memory?

Watching the place light up at night and seeing the place literally transform from rural into urban.

Highlight:

Alishan National Scenic Area

Why?

Again, some beautiful trails to spend a day walking around while exploring the park. It’s a popular attraction but due to its relative remoteness and size, it felt a million miles from anything at times.

Sunrise over mountains at Alishan

What did you do?

Apart from explore the park forest, I watched the sun rise over the mountains and checked what is known as the Sea of Clouds, which was pretty cool I must admit. If the train isn’t going, which it wasn’t when I was there, then these are ‘things to do’ as it were.

Lasting memory?

The noise and gasps from all the on-lookers when the sun finally came up from behind the mountains. It was very pretty, and really is seen as a huge deal.
